All Norwalk students deserve access to safe and attractive schools that support learning and provide a nurturing, inclusive environment. Yet with Norwalk's school-age population projected to increase steadily in the coming years, our schools are on the verge of running out of space. As a result, Norwalk needs to create new schools, either by new construction, or by renovating or expanding existing buildings.

Based on the amount of space needed and the limited availability of property currently owned by the City, the site of the former Nathaniel Ely School and the current Columbus Magnet School are the only current options for adding more school space in South Norwalk.

In November of 2016, Norwalk Public Schools conducted a survey of Norwalk residents to hear about what the community thinks about these options. The survey was conducted in English and Spanish, and closed on November 23, 2016.

The results were presented to the Facilities Committee and the Board of Education. For a summary of the results, please click on the document below.
