John Cross Named New Athletic Director of Brien McMahon High School

Longtime NPS Baseball Coach, Teacher and Brien McMahon alum John Cross has been named athletic director at Brien McMahon High School. Cross will begin his position following the retirement of current Athletic Director Joe Madaffari this coming June.


“Coach Cross has had great success as a role model for students, always inspiring our athletes to exceed expectations in all areas of their lives,” said BMHS Principal Scott Hurwitz. “We are excited to have him continue the tradition of a strong and positive sports program at Brien McMahon.”


The veteran science teacher and class advisor started at Brien McMahon in1998. He has been varsity baseball coach since 2002. While in this position, he has worked to bring support to the BMHS sports program through a variety of undertakings. These initiatives include games at the Baseball Hall of Fame, the McMahon/Norwalk game at Harbor Yard, annual clinics for youth baseball coaches and players, and educational panels of college coaches and former professional players. He also fundraised to upgrade BMHS sports facilities through installation of signage, practice and field equipment. 


During Cross’ tenure at BMHS, he has helped lead the varsity baseball team through many state and FCIAC tournaments and state finals. There have been 18 players who have gone on to collegiate sports careers while under the guidance of Cross. Cross is also FCIAC Baseball Chairperson and CIAC Baseball Rules Committee.
