Norwalk Public Schools offer a variety of experiences for younger students including Columbus, a K-8 magnet school based on the Bank Street School model, Silvermine Dual Language School, an English-Spanish immersion program, and new for 2020-21, Tracey Magnet School, a 2019 Blue Ribbon School and nationally recognized Character Education School. Entrance to these programs is determined by lottery. Lottery applications for the 2020-2021 school year are now open. 

Information sessions for the 2020-2021 school year for these programs will take place starting in mid-January. Additional info sessions and tours will be held throughout the next few months. Families may only apply for one NPS magnet school program. Duplicate applications will not be eligible for participation in either lottery. Separate applications must be completed for siblings. 

Columbus K-8 Magnet School

Columbus offers families a Progressive Bank Street/H.O.T. (Higher Order Thinking) model of learning. The mission of the school is to develop passionate, lifelong learners who strive for academic excellence by cultivating their creativity and imagination through hands-on, integrated units of study and arts infusion.  Applications: Applications will be distributed after attending a mandatory evening informational session or daytime guided tour. Reservations required.

Eligibility: Norwalk residents entering K-8
Final application deadline: March 13
Lottery drawing: March 26 at 6pm at Columbus

Silvermine Dual Language Magnet School

A full immersion English/Spanish dual language school, the goals of the program are to graduate bilingual, biliterate and culturally competent students prepared to utilize their skills in an increasingly global society. Open to students of any linguistic background. Students zoned for Silvermine and siblings of current students have priority, however all must submit an application.

Applications: Available online or from the school. Attendance at one of the two information nights (Jan. 9 or March 16 is mandatory to be eligible for the lottery. 
Eligibility: Norwalk residents grades K-5
Final application deadline: March 20

Tracey Magnet School

Tracey Magnet School was named a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education. Each day, Tracey students are challenged to leave their “PRINT” on the world by living the core values embedded in the Tracey pledge: Problem solving, Respect, Integrity, Being Neighborly and Taking Responsibility. In 2019 Tracey Magnet school was also designated a National School of Character by Character.org. Tracey is the only school in the state of Connecticut to earn this title, joining 87 schools and 3 districts in 24 states across the country.
