NPS Expectations for Successful Hybrid and Remote Learning

NPS As the current norm of hybrid and online learning continues, NPS staff, students and parents are reminded to keep digital safety best practices in mind to ensure a positive learning and work environment. Listed below are expectations customized for NPS staff, students and families.

Student Expectations - Digital Safety

  1. Students will dress as if they were in class learning. Students will use an appropriate place within their homes as their work area. This area should be quiet, free from distractions, and conducive to learning.
  2. Students will join and be active members of a teacher’s Google Classroom and will respect all guidelines set forth by the teacher.
  3. Students will respectfully communicate with teachers and other staff members through district email and/or designated platform set up by teacher.
  4. Students will be responsible for turning in all work on time in alignment with physical classroom requirements.
  5. Students will be visible on video camera with microphone ready to go 5 minutes before class begins. Please use the following link for directions how to change your background: How to change your background
  6. Students will interact with classroom through Virtual Chat Box.
  7. Students will charge devices overnight (every night) so they have full power at the start of the day and   will bring their Laptop and Chromebook chargers to school every day so they can be plugged into their classroom power strips.
  8. Students will follow guidelines set forth in the Norwalk Public Schools Acceptable Use Policy.

Teacher Expectations for Successful Hybrid Learning

  1. Teachers will create a digital learning environment that includes Google Classroom and a Google Meet or Microsoft Teams video host.
  2. Teachers will communicate with Parents through Google Classroom “updates” that are sent automatically when a parent is connected to their student account.
  3. Teachers will bring in students into the Virtual Learning Environment at the start of class and support student learning during the virtual class period.
  4. Teachers will deliver synchronous learning each day
  5. Teachers will respond to questions from virtual students through the Chat box of designated video platform.
  6. Teachers will alert students and parents of any changes to video conferencing links that may occur during the school day.
  7. Teachers will take attendance in accordance to the district and state guidelines and record the attendance appropriately in PowerSchool
  8. Teachers will model and consistently review digital expectations for all students throughout the school year, as needed.

Parent Expectations for Supporting Online Students

  1. All parent email addresses will be connected to their student’s Google Classrooms so that they receive daily/weekly updates of classroom activities.
  2. Parents will help develop a consistent environment by making sure their child is ready with their materials to start each day for virtual/hybrid learning and are aware of where to go each day (an area where they can work).
  3. Parents will make sure their child is attending their classes or doing their assignments each day.
  4. Parents will make sure their child/children are aware of student expectations and discuss what is expected of them each day.
  5. Parents will take an active role in ensuring that students have an appropriate place to work when learning remotely.
  6. Be mindful that the online classroom is in fact a classroom and not the appropriate time to engage or add comments during the teachers’ instructional time with the class.  
  7. Remember that school is a safe space for students to demonstrate their understanding so teachers are able to identify areas of weakness in order to differentiate instruction to strengthen students' skillset.
  8. Communication: schedule an appointment to discuss your child’s progress with his/her teacher.
  9. Do not interrupt, engage, or interact with the teacher during live instruction. Remember, schedule an appointment to talk to the teacher.
  10. To protect the privacy of all students, recording instructional sessions without permission is prohibited.
  11. Assist your child with their work as needed, but do not complete or supply answers.
