School Hours / Delays & Closing Info

Delayed Openings:

When schools have a delayed opening, before school programs operated in Norwalk Public Schools will also have a delayed start for the same amount of time as the schools. For example, if an elementary school opens two hours late due to snow (opening at 11 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.), the afterschool program will also start two hours later (opening at 9 a.m. instead of 7 a.m.).

Early Dismissal:

When there is early dismissal due to bad weather or any other unsafe conditions, afterschool programs are cancelled.

When there is a scheduled early dismissal as shown on the school calendar (e.g. parent conferences, etc.), afterschool programs will begin as soon as school is dismissed and will remain open until their regularly scheduled closing time (generally 6 p.m.)

Information Sources:

The official Norwalk Public Schools website and social media channels are your best sources for information on weather-related delays and closings.  Our automated School Messenger phone system will also be activated when necessary.

Information regarding weather-related school opening delays, early dismissals and closures will be sent to the following media sources:

Healthier School Start Times for 2020-21

In September 2019, the Norwalk Board of Education approved a change in school start times beginning with the 2020-21 school year.

The upcoming shift in school start times for Norwalk Public Schools:

  • Aligns with sleep study research by offering a full hour of extra time in the morning.
  •  Does not compromise the quality of athletics, arts and other afternoon programs.
  •   Does not have a major impact on start times for other grade levels. There is no change to the current middle school start time of 8:15 am. No elementary school will begin before 8 am and most elementary schools will maintain their 2019-20 schedule.
  •  To make sure that teachers have enough training and preparation time for the 2020-21 school year that combines in-person and remote learning, schools will end 15 minutes earlier each day than originally scheduled.
