Phase II of the Portrait of a Graduate begins in the 2025 to 2026 school year and builds on the work started in Phase I. In Phase I, the focus was on supporting students to grow as critical thinkers by learning to ask thoughtful questions, solve problems, and explain their thinking using evidence.
This year, we are deepening our focus on critical thinking through the effective communicator competency. Students will learn how to express their ideas clearly, actively engage with peers, and adjust their communication depending on the audience and purpose. Strong communication skills help students share their thinking, collaborate with others, and apply their learning in real-world situations.
Phase II also connects to our district’s literacy vision. Across all subject areas, students will have meaningful opportunities to read, write, speak, and listen in ways that support both communication and critical thinking.
Another important part of Phase II is reflection. This year, students will begin reflecting on how they are growing in the Portrait of a Graduate skills. Our goal is to help students take more ownership of their learning and understand what it means to become future ready.
Families will also see new resources on how to support children in developing critical thinking and communication at home. These skills are not just learned in school, but also built through everyday experiences and conversations.
