Health & Physical Education

Connecticut schools are guided by the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model that provides the infrastructure schools can use to engage students, families, staff and the community-at-large to improve the cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of every child.

Health education and physical education are two components of a coordinated approach to school health.

Health Education

Norwalk Public School's health education teaches knowledge and skills in the areas of substance abuse, injury and disease prevention, healthy and active lifestyle and human growth and development. Decision making and goal setting strategies are discussed throughout the curriculum.

Health education is required for every student in grades 6-10. All elementary school students receive health instruction through the physical education program. In addition, Norwalk Police educators teach 5th grade students the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.).

Physical Education

From the Connecticut State Department of Education

Planned, sequential PK-12 physical education provides psychomotor, cognitive and affective content and learning experiences that promote optimum personal development. Quality curriculum and instruction, provided in a safe, supportive environment, offer meaningful, challenging learning for all students, and result in lifetime learning outcomes of skills, literacy, and ability to understand concepts and develop plans for lifetime physical activity and wellness.
