Humanities
At Norwalk Public Schools, the Humanities include Literacy/English Language Arts, Social Studies, and World Languages. These subjects help students understand the world around them and their place in it.
Our curriculum is based on the Connecticut Core Standards and is designed to clearly outline what students will learn at each grade level. Through reading, writing, learning new languages, and exploring history, culture, and civics, students build the skills they need to become thoughtful, informed, and engaged members of our diverse community.
With guidance from their teachers and classmates, students learn to read closely, express their ideas, ask questions, and share their perspectives. The Humanities encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and meaningful discussions that support both academic growth and personal development.
Together, these learning experiences prepare students for success throughout their time at Norwalk Public Schools and beyond.
Literacy & English/Language Arts
The K–12 Literacy/English Language Arts program is designed to build strong readers, writers, communicators, collaborators, and critical thinkers prepared for college, career, and life. Guided by our Literacy Vision, we believe literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning, success, and access to opportunities that promote economic mobility.
Instruction is standards-aligned, culturally responsive, and delivered through supportive learning environments that meet the needs of all learners. Through high expectations, targeted support, and engaging instruction, students develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in a dynamic, digital world.

Social Studies
Social Studies is an integrated K–12 program that explores history, civics and government, geography, economics, and the social sciences to develop informed, responsible, and active citizens in a diverse society. Learning progresses from a focus on the individual, family, and community in elementary school to inquiry-based, standards-aligned coursework in middle and high school that prepares students for college, career, and civic life.
Visit the Social Studies page for more information.
World Languages
The World Language program at NPS is aligned with state and national standards and emphasizes communication skills that support success in school, careers, travel, and everyday life. Students develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and viewing while building an appreciation for diverse cultures and global perspectives. Through engaging, real-life learning experiences, students gain essential literacy and 21st-century skills that prepare them to communicate effectively and participate confidently in a global society.
