The Marine Science Pathway is a districtwide K–12 program that engages students in the study of marine environments, sustainability, and environmental science. Through hands-on learning, field experiences, and partnerships with local organizations, students explore real-world science connected to Long Island Sound. The pathway is fully aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and promotes inquiry-based, three-dimensional learning across grade levels.

The pathway includes three schools:

• Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School
   
• West Rocks Middle School
   
• Brien McMahon High School

Students begin exploring marine science concepts as early as kindergarten at Jefferson, but also may enter later in their education. The pathway continues to grow and deepen in middle and high school, offering more specialized and applied learning experiences as students advance.

•  Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School: Marine science is integrated into every classroom experience, and all students are engaged in hands-on activities and experiences.
   
• West Rocks Middle School: Students may choose to take marine science in place of a traditional science course.
   
• Brien McMahon High School: Students enroll in the Marine Science Pathway and follow a sequence of marine science courses designed to build knowledge and career readiness over time.

For students who attend other schools in Norwalk, a district pathway lottery system may provide access to Jefferson, West Rocks, or Brien McMahon, depending on availability and grade level. 

Students engage in field trips to coastal habitats, hands-on investigations, marine-related STEM projects, environmental monitoring, and conservation work. High school students may also participate in research projects, internships, and marine technology experiences such as remotely operated vehicle (ROV) construction.

In addition to covering core science content aligned with NGSS, the Marine Science Pathway emphasizes local ecosystems, place-based learning, and environmental problem-solving. It connects classroom science to real issues and experiences, helping students become informed and empowered stewards of the environment.

Norwalk Public Schools supports the pathway through a dedicated Marine Science Coordinator, curriculum development, professional learning for educators, and partnerships with organizations like The Maritime Aquarium. This work is part of the district’s larger vision for equity and excellence in STEM education.

Yes. The pathway introduces students to a wide range of career options in marine biology, oceanography, marine engineering, environmental science, aquaculture, and related STEM fields. High school students may gain early exposure to these careers through specialized courses, fieldwork, and internships.

Families are encouraged to support student learning by attending school events, volunteering for conservation activities, and participating in family engagement nights. These events highlight student work and foster connections between home, school, and the local marine environment.
