Elementary Progress Report
Norwalk Public Schools is excited to announce changes to the elementary progress reports.
This page will walk parents through what's changing, why these updates were made and how they'll help strengthen communication with families.

What is the Progress Report?
The Progress Report is designed to show a student's growth over time. It provides families with information about their child's progress in academic subjects, as well as the social, academic and personal learning skills that contribute to success both inside and outside the classroom.
Why are we changing it?
We listened to parents and staff and developed a Progress Report that is more detailed and easier to read. The updated format is designed to provide families with information about what their child is learning and how they are progressing, and better show the specific skills and content students are expected to learn in each grade level.
The goal is to provide families with more meaningful information about where their child is in the learning process and how they are developing throughout the school year.
What's different?
Rather than the previous numerical system, students progress will will now be communicated using three indicators:
- Consistently means a student demonstrates a skill or behavior independently and across different settings. They apply their learning with little to no support and show understanding in a variety of situations.
- Progressing means a student demonstrates the skill or behavior some of the time but may still need reminders, guidance or support depending on the task or setting.
- Beginning means a student is just starting to develop the skill or behavior. They benefit from explicit instruction, modeling and ongoing support as they continue building their understanding.
These indicators emphasize that learning is a process. They help communicate where a student is on their journey toward meeting grade-level expectations.
Additionally, rather than broad domains in content areas, the updated progress report now allows for more communication specific to grade level skills.
What areas are included?
The Progress Report continues to report on student performance in all academic subject areas, including special area classes.
It also includes Social, Academic and Personal Learning skills, which reflect the human and interpersonal side of learning and are developed intentionally every day in the classroom. These skills are taught, practiced and reinforced through daily interactions, collaboration, and classroom routines, and they play a critical role in a student’s overall growth and success in school.
These include skills such as:
- Following directions
- Taking responsibility for actions
- Identifying and expressing feelings appropriately
- Demonstrating self-control
- Working collaboratively with others
- Persevering through challenges
These skills are an essential part of a child’s development and, alongside academic learning, provide families with a more complete and meaningful picture of student growth.
