Healthier School Start Times

Healthier School Start Times for 2020-21

In September 2019, the Norwalk Board of Education approved a change in school start times beginning with the 2020-21 school year. The decision reflects growing national awareness of the negative impact of early school times on student physical and social-emotional health. Based on current science and a growing understanding of the importance of sleep, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine have all recommended that high schools start no earlier than 8:30 am.

The Board’s approval followed a comprehensive study of the issues, impact and alternatives conducted in 2018-19 by the NPS School Start Time Committee. Convened by Superintendent Dr. Steven Adamowski at the direction of the Board, the committee was comprised of community members, parents, teachers, administrators, and medical experts, supported by a consultant in school district transportation.
