Norwalk Public Schools is pleased to announce that for the second year in a row the district was named one of the best communities in the country for music education by the NAMM Foundation. NPS was one of 686 school districts to earn this distinction, including neighboring school systems Wilton, Weston, Westport, Danbury, Darien and Milford.

The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education.  Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, NPS answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

This year focused particularly on maintaining music education in response to Covid. Throughout the public health crisis, NPS continued to engage students with a variety of music formats and activities from in-person strings to online lessons, virtual talent shows and performances. During the second part of the year, band and chorus students were given the opportunity to participate in musical activities in-person.

A leading district in the state when it comes to arts access, Norwalk Public Schools has a long, distinguished tradition of music programs including an award-winning marching band, orchestra, musicals and nationally recognized performances. Visual and Performing Arts Pathways provide students with the opportunity to follow their passion, while learning curriculum through a creative lens.
