Brookside, Fox Run and Marvin elementary schools invited families to take “A Journey Through the Pages” and celebrate literacy through an interactive and joyful experience.

More than 100 students and family members participated in the multi-school Literacy Night, which aimed to help families better understand how reading and digital literacy connect in today’s world. The event helped bridge learning between students’ classrooms and their homes, while also highlighting the importance of media balance and digital safety when using online resources. Families were introduced to safe, engaging applications and websites that support inquiry, gaming, and storytelling.

“The event helped strengthen the partnership between school and home while reinforcing that reading, creativity, and digital citizenship are important parts of our students’ learning,” said Jodi Flom Nathanson, the library media specialist at Fox Run Elementary School.

Nathanson partnered with fellow library media specialists Audra Good of Brookside and Stephanie Deeb of Marvin to host the event, which emphasized that reading truly is a passport to countless adventures. The evening also served as an extension of Read Across America Day, which was celebrated across Norwalk Public Schools during the school day.

Supporting Families in the Digital Age

The program began with a dedicated workshop for parents and guardians focused on navigating digital literacy in today’s world. Families were introduced to the Family Technology Planner through ALL4ED Future Ready Schools and AT&T. During the session, parents received practical tips and tools to help their children build safe and positive connections across digital platforms.

While the parents went to school, students enjoyed a read-aloud with author Sharon McClintock Miller, who shared her story, “Sonia’s Digital World.” The story introduces students and families to thoughtful digital citizenship and healthy media habits in an engaging, age-appropriate way.

Later in the evening, students and families explored a wide range of literacy stations, digital learning activities, and hands-on experiences designed to spark curiosity and creativity.

“The positive energy, conversations between students and parents, and the high level of engagement at each station showed that families were actively connecting with literacy in meaningful ways,” Nathanson said.
