A Message from the Norwalk Board of Education - June 10, 2025

Late this morning, Dr. Estrella received from Mayor Rilling and Senator Duff a proposal for additional funding from both the City and the State for 2025-2026. The Board has scheduled a special meeting for this evening to finalize its budget for 2025-2026, including reductions in various areas made necessary by the fact that the appropriation for education made by the City for 2025-2026 fell some twelve million dollars short of the amount request by the Board of Education.
Given that the possibility of additional funding could affect the final Board of Education budget for 2025-2026, as Chairperson I am canceling the special meeting for this evening so that the Board of Education can consider this proposal further. The Board of Education welcomes further discussion of additional funding for the coming year.
However, any such discussion must be thoughtful and consistent with the separate roles and responsibilities of the Board of Education and the City under statute. We will be responding to the proposal after careful review, and we hope to be able to reschedule the meeting to finalize the budget this coming Tuesday, June 17.
