City of Norwalk & NPS Celebrate Steel Topping-Off Ceremony for South Norwalk Elementary School
On Oct. 8, 2024, Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling welcomed Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff; Dr. Alexandra Estrella, Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools; State Rep. Kadeem Roberts; Commissioner Gilman of the CT Department of Administrative Services; Deputy Commissioner Hewes of the CT State Department of Education; and local and city leaders participated in a steel topping-off ceremony for the new South Norwalk School and celebrated the City of Norwalk recently receiving state funding for a roundabout next to the new school.
The ceremony celebrated the placement of the final steel beam in the building's structure, a significant milestone in the construction process of the new South Norwalk School. The anticipated completion of the new school is scheduled for late summer 2025, in order to welcome students for the 2025-26 school year.
Earlier this year, the City of Norwalk held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new South Norwalk School, the community's first neighborhood school in over 40 years. The South Norwalk neighborhood school is also the city's first new school construction project under the new state reimbursement rate of 60%, saving the city millions of dollars.
Furthermore, the City and NPS thanked state leaders for continuing to invest in Norwalk's youth and the South Norwalk Neighborhood community through a $2.5 million Community Investment Fund grant that will go toward the construction of a roundabout next to the new South Norwalk School. This school infrastructure project will help improve safety for all roadway users, particularly our students, when they enter this brand-new state-of-the-art school by promoting lower speeds, safe pedestrian crossing, and traffic calming around the area.
