NPS Awards 40 Students the Excellence in Poetry Award
The Norwalk Board of Education wishes to spotlight our outstanding young poets from across the district who participated in this year’s Poetry Contest. The NPS Curriculum Department received over 250 entries and from those chose 40 for the “Excellence in Poetry” awards.
The theme of this year’s poetry contest was “Where Are You From?” inspired by the book of the same title, written by Yamile Saied Méndez. The contest was open to students in grades 3-12.
Students were encouraged to consider all the ways that they are unique and special. They could consider their heritage/culture, family, geography and/or traditions (just to name a few). The poems could be written in English or the student’s native language.
“It was our hope that students will be inspired to use their voices through the creative process of writing!” said Stacey Bergin, Education Administrator for Curricula and Professional Development.
