NPS Celebrates June Heritage Months

NPS Celebrates June Heritage Months
NPS Communications

Norwalk Public Schools and the Norwalk Board of Education are proud to recognize and celebrate the month of June as both Caribbean American Heritage Month and Immigrant Heritage Month.

June is a time to honor and uplift the incredible contributions of Caribbean Americans, whose roots and impact stretch deep into the story of our nation — as far back as one of our Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton, who was born in the Caribbean. Since 2006, when President George W. Bush officially proclaimed Caribbean American Heritage Month, communities across the country have come together to recognize the vibrant culture, history, and achievements of Caribbean Americans.

We also take this month to recognize Immigrant Heritage Month, a celebration of the generations of immigrants who have come to the United States in search of opportunity, freedom, and a better life. Since 2014, the "I Stand With Immigrants" campaign has encouraged all of us to reflect on the vital role immigrants play in shaping our communities, economy, and shared American story.

Earlier this year, our Board reaffirmed our commitment to protecting and supporting all students, no matter where they or their families come from. We know that nearly all of us have roots in immigration, and that is something to be proud of.

This June, the Norwalk Board of Education invites everyone in our Norwalk community to take a moment to reflect on their own heritage, learn about others, and celebrate the diversity that makes America and our schools so special.
