Norwalk Public Schools and the Norwalk Board of Education proudly recognizes May as Mental Health Awareness Month. This is a time to reflect on the importance of emotional well-being and to recommit to supporting the mental health of our students, staff, and families.

Even as resources tighten and schools are asked to stretch further than ever, our focus on mental health remains strong. We know how vital these services are—and how much our students and families rely on them. We are dedicated to continuing this work, even as we navigate new challenges.

Earlier this month, students from Brien McMahon and Norwalk High Schools took part in the NorWALK for Mental Health & Wellness Fair, where they proudly represented their schools and shared how they care for their mental health through extracurriculars, peer connection, and school-based activities. Their leadership reminds us that raising awareness starts with listening, sharing, and showing up for one another.

Across our schools, students have access to mental health care through our health centers, school counselors, and social workers. These professionals provide critical support, helping students manage stress, build resilience, and stay on track academically. We thank them for the compassion they bring to their work every day.

We’re also grateful for the community organizations that continue to work alongside us. Their partnership is essential, and we are committed to maintaining access to these services so that our students and families continue to receive the care they need—wherever they are.

Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has encouraged people across the country to learn more about mental health, recognize the impact of trauma, and celebrate the journey of healing. That message is as important now as ever: You are not alone. You matter. And support is available.

By declaring May as Mental Health Awareness Month, Norwalk Public Schools and the Norwalk Board of Education affirms its deep belief in the importance of mental wellness—for every child, every family, and every part of our community.
