NPS Celebrates Black History Month 2026
NPS Communications

The Norwalk Board of Education proudly recognizes Black History Month across Norwalk Public Schools. Throughout February, we encourage our schools, educators, students, and community to honor the history, achievements, and lasting contributions of Black Americans.

This year marks a significant milestone: 100 years of Black commemorations. In 1926, historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week to elevate the contributions of Black Americans, selecting February in recognition of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. That observance expanded in 1976 to Black History Month and has since been recognized annually at the national level.

In recognition of this milestone, Norwalk Public Schools has selected the theme “100 Years of Black Commemorations” for the district’s fourth annual Black History & Heritage Festival. The festival will take place on Thursday, February 26, from 5:45 to 8:00 p.m. at Norwalk High School.

The community is invited to join us for an evening celebrating Black history, culture, and excellence through student performances, presentations, and the return of our “Black Wall Street,” highlighting local Black-owned businesses.

Across the district, Black History Month is celebrated in classrooms through lessons that highlight influential historical figures, educators, inventors, authors, poets, and civil rights leaders, helping students understand the impact of Black Americans on our nation’s past and present.

Now more than ever, the education and preservation of Black history is essential. By reflecting on both the challenges and achievements of the past, we strengthen our commitment to a future grounded in equity, inclusion, and respect for the diverse contributions that shape our shared American story.

The Norwalk Board of Education encourages all schools to participate in activities and learning opportunities throughout February that honor generations of Black Americans who have enriched our community and our country.
