NPS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2025

NPS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2025
NPS Communications

Norwalk Public Schools proudly recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month. Observed each year from September 15 to October 15, we take this time to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans whose roots trace to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Across the United States and here in Norwalk, Hispanic Americans have shaped every facet of our communities as educators, entrepreneurs, public servants, artists, scientists, and leaders. Their stories are woven into the fabric of our nation and play a vital role in building a more inclusive and exciting future.

This month-long celebration began as a week-long observance in 1968 and was later expanded to a 30-day period in 1988 to better honor the depth and diversity of Hispanic heritage. The start date of September 15 reflects the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, while Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence shortly after, on September 16 and 18.

In Norwalk Public Schools, where more than half of our students proudly identify as Hispanic, this month holds deep personal and collective meaning. Our diversity is a source of strength that inspires cultural pride, academic excellence, and community connection.

Part of that community connection will happen at the district’s fourth annual Hispanic Heritage Festival on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 5:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Brien McMahon High School. This year’s theme, “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” will come alive through powerful student performances in dance, music, visual arts, theater, and spoken word, all honoring the traditions and triumphs of Hispanic culture.

We encourage our schools, families, and community members to take part in this celebration. By honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, we reaffirm our commitment to cultural understanding, inclusive education, and the celebration of every voice that contributes to our shared story.

Together, we recognize and uplift the countless ways Hispanic Americans have enriched our community, and we look forward to continuing this journey of celebration and learning.
