The Norwalk Board of Education proudly recognizes March as Irish-American Heritage Month.

Throughout this month, we join communities across the nation in celebrating the tens of millions of Americans who proudly claim Irish ancestry. We honor the generations of Irish immigrants and their descendants who have helped shape our country, serving bravely in the armed forces, leading at every level of government, building businesses, strengthening neighborhoods, and contributing richly to the civic, cultural, and economic life of the United States.

In 1991, the U.S. Congress officially designated March as Irish-American Heritage Month. The month coincides with St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, a celebration that has grown into a joyful recognition of Irish culture, traditions, and enduring influence.

As our nation marks America’s 250th anniversary and reflects on the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we remember that at least nine signers were of Irish heritage, including three who were born in Ireland. Today, more than 33 million Americans claim Irish ancestry, five times the population of Ireland itself.

The Norwalk Board of Education encourages our students, staff, and families to explore the history of Irish immigration, to learn about the resilience and determination of those who came seeking opportunity, and to recognize the many achievements and contributions of Irish Americans past and present. Together, we celebrate the heritage, history, and vibrant traditions that continue to enrich our community and our country.
