NPS Celebrates Women's History Month 2026

The Norwalk Board of Education is proud to recognize March as Women’s History Month. This is a time to recognize, celebrate, and honor the achievements and contributions of women throughout history and their impact on the United States and the world.

Women have played a pivotal role in shaping societies, advancing education, and fostering innovation across all fields. Their contributions have often gone unrecognized, making it essential to ensure their stories are told and celebrated.

This year, Norwalk Public Schools is proud to partner with the City of Norwalk’s Commission on Gender Equity to host “Elevate & Lead,” an event celebrating Women’s History Month, on Tuesday, March 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Norwalk Concert Hall.

The evening is an opportunity to honor women who elevate others and lead with purpose. Two deserving individuals will be recognized for their actions that have had a positive impact on women, girls and other marginalized gender identities such as transgender people and gender non-conforming people in the City of Norwalk.

The program will also feature student performances that showcase creativity, expression, and the power of youth voice. The evening concludes with an inspirational talk by Monica Brown (Tracey Elementary School), inviting reflection on leadership, purpose, and what it truly means to elevate others.

Women create opportunity, open doors, and inspire confidence in those around them through their actions and their example. From students finding their voice, to educators guiding and mentoring, to community leaders driving positive change, Elevate and Lead celebrates leadership at every stage of life.

Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California, in 1978 and gained national recognition in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. In 1987, it expanded into a month-long observance, honoring the vital achievements of women across generations.

The 2026 national theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” selected by the National Women’s History Alliance, expands our understanding of sustainability beyond just environmental concerns. It encompasses financial sustainability, community resilience, leadership succession, and intergenerational equity.

Norwalk Public Schools is committed to fostering an inclusive educational environment that recognizes and honors the diverse achievements of women. Educating students about the resilience, leadership, and innovation of women throughout history empowers them to advocate for equity, pursue knowledge, and embrace their own limitless potential.

By declaring Women’s History Month, the Norwalk Board of Education encourages all schools, educators, students, and community members to participate in programs, discussions, and activities that celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women past, present, and future.
