NPS Communications

Congratulations to Roton Middle School students Leighton Murphy Trujillo and Andrea Rubio Hernandez and West Rocks Middle School students Casey LeBlanc, Antonio Sforza and Lorraine Solomon! These students were recognized in the 2024 NCTE Promising Young Writers Contest.

Roton’s Leighton and West Rocks’ Antonio received the designation of First Class. Andrea at Roton and Casey and Lorraine at West Rocks received the Superior designation.

National judges evaluated each piece of writing for expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. For the second year, the Promising Young Writers contest has four designations, with the “First Class” distinction replacing the previous Certificate of Recognition. The new distinctions are as follows:

  1. First Class
  2. Superior
  3. Excellent
  4. Merit

The Promising Young Writers Program represents NCTE’s commitment to early and continuing work in the development of writing. The school-based writing program was established in 1985 to stimulate and recognize writing talents and to emphasize the importance of writing skills among eighth-grade students. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate students.

This year, schools nominated 177 students to participate in the Promising Young Writers Program. Students were nominated from 33 states and Puerto Rico, as well as Canada and South Africa. Two to three independent judges evaluated each submission holistically on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style.
