Norwalk, Conn. (May 20, 2020) – Christina Guerra has been selected as principal of Brookside Elementary School effective July 1, 2020. Guerra brings with her a strong, student-centered leadership style, with a commitment to the social, emotional and cognitive development of all learners in a safe and motivating environment. Her skill set includes a focus on restorative practices, as well as school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).

Guerra was recommended for the principal position by the Brookside Governance Council, and was nominated by Norwalk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Steven J. Adamowski. Her appointment was confirmed at the May 19 Norwalk Board of Education meeting.

Previously, Ms. Guerra was assistant principal at Nathan Hale Middle School for the 2019-20 school year. At Nathan Hale, Guerra provided instructional leadership and supervision of academic departments and lead initiatives in the areas of curriculum development, instruction and student assessment. She also focused on furthering professional learning for staff, while implementing schoolwide systems, processes, and protocols to ensure a positive and safe learning environment. Additionally, she supervised screening, hiring and evaluation of staff, and oversaw building maintenance and safety procedures.

Prior to Nathan Hale, she served as Curriculum and Instruction Site Director (CISD) at Fox Run Elementary School from 2016 through 2019, ensuring effective implementation of the elementary curricula and delivering leadership in curriculum, instruction, assessment and staff development. As CISD, Ms. Guerra served as building administrator in the absence of the principal, supervised non-certified staff, monitored quality implementation of student progress and intervention teams, and facilitated PPT and 504 meetings. At Fox Run, Guerra also managed the School Improvement Plan, developing goals and actions steps aligned with the school and district vision. She also provided leadership to the School Governance Council in the creation of a shared mission and vision designed to build coherence and guidance at the school level.

Prior to joining NPS, she was a resident administrator, LEAD CT/UCAPP at Bradley School in Derby, Connecticut. Guerra’s duties included full responsibility of building functions in the absence of a principal. She also assisted the superintendent and principals in aligning K-5 curriculum district-wide and led faculty in the evaluation of standards-based curriculum and effective instruction. Guerra began her educational career as a second grade teacher in New Haven at Brennan-Rogers Magnet School: The Art of Communication and Media. She also taught kindergarten and fifth grade in Derby.

Guerra holds a Sixth Year Degree in Educational Administration & Supervision from the University of Connecticut, Storrs. She also earned a Master of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport and a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality & Tourism, from Central Connecticut State University. Guerra was named Derby Public School’s “District Teacher of the Year” for 2014-2015 and Irving School’s “Teacher of the Year” for 2014-2015.
