Norwalk Public Schools is pleased to announce that Dr. Sylvia Sanders has been named principal of Fox Run Elementary School. Dr. Sanders follows former Principal James Martinez who has been appointed as district wide director of school counseling. 

Dr. Sanders brings to Norwalk vast experience as a situational and inspirational leader, and strong analytical, evaluative and decision-making skills. Dr. Sanders joins Fox Run from IDEA Schools in Tampa Bay, where she held the role of Vice President of Schools.

During her tenure at IDEA Schools, Dr. Sanders served as a senior member of the regional leadership cabinet, directly managing a portfolio of schools, principals, and initiatives that impacted the education of future graduates. Prior to this role, she was principal at several schools throughout the country with a focus on increasing student achievement.

As principal of Shadow Rock Elementary School in Georgia, Dr. Sanders established and promoted high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and responsibility for behavior. She oversaw procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, and discipline systems to ensure a safe and orderly climate, building maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, and emergency procedures.

Dr. Sanders also served as the principal of Cascade Elementary School in Atlanta and Turnaround Principal of Duval Charter School at Arlington, a school of 850 students spanning grades K-8. As principal of America’s Choice at SAND School in Hartford, Sanders increased student achievement by more than 10 percent in Mathematics, 15 percent in Reading, and 25 percent in Writing. She also developed an after school academic program utilizing a School Improvement Grant.

Additional leadership positions include principal of Downtown Miami Charter School, faculty supervisor at University of Phoenix, and cluster leader at NCEE/America’s Choice Inc. Sanders began her career as an elementary school teacher.

Dr. Sanders holds the following certifications: Connecticut Professional Educational Leadership (K-12) & Elementary Education (K-6), Florida Professional Educational Leadership (K-12) and Elementary Education (K-6), Georgia Professional Educational Leadership (K-12) and Elementary Education (P-8), Mississippi Professional Educational Leadership (K-12) and Math Education, Science and Social Studies ( K-8), Arkansas Professional Educational Leadership (K-12), Superintendent Certification (K-12) and Elementary Education/Middle School.

Dr. Sanders has a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Educational Leadership from Capella University. She also holds a Master of Science Degree in Education with a specialization in Technology Integration and a Master of Science in Course Completion in Curriculum and Instruction from Walden University. Sanders earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Florida A & M University.

Dr. Sanders will transition into her new role beginning on September 29. Her appointment will formalized by the Board of Education in October.
