Norwalk Public Schools, in partnership with Temple University, has launched the next phase of the districtwide Norwalk Educational Equity Initiative. To get a deeper perspective from the community on equity, a survey for parents, students and staff is now available online. Focus groups will also be held over the next several weeks to explore equity as a pillar of the conversation. Focus group signups are now available online. Sessions will be take place virtually and in-person for staff, parents and educators. Input from the survey and focus groups will be utilized to develop the next Strategic Operating Plan.

All members of the NPS community including students, staff and parents are invited and encouraged to participate. This includes parents who currently have a student enrolled in the district, or have had a student enrolled in the district in the past.

“To design a theory of change around the issues of equity and bias within our educational system, a strong understanding is needed of the hopes and dreams of our community. Learning more about the experiences of students, parents and staff is critical to this process,” said Norwalk Public Schools Superintendent Alexandra Estrella. “The valuable feedback we receive will help shape the conversation moving forward and ensure that all Norwalk children are being served well.”

Focus group participation is voluntary and requires consent. Focus groups will be conducted with less than six individuals at a time. The in-person focus groups will be conducted with at least 6 feet space distancing in an open space at a school site.  Each focus group will last about 30-45 minutes. Participants have the option to skip or not answer particular questions during session. Those enrolled in a focus group can exit at any time.

The survey takes about 12 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. Participants can exit the survey at any time.

Students will complete the survey during school at a time to be determined in October.  Staff members should check their emails for links to the internal survey and focus group sign up.

The ongoing equity initiative consists of four phases of work: an examination of disproportionate representation that looks at where children of color are under-represented or over-represented in programs and situations; a community survey and focus groups; presentations to the Norwalk community on findings and recommendations; and equity literacy development of district leadership. Recommendations from the work will also include plans for a yearlong program of professional development for employees that will focus on strategies for reducing implicit bias-based beliefs.

Questions about the study or research-related problems should be brought to the attention of the research team at or lead investigator, Dr. Edward Fergus, Assistant Professor at Temple University, 215-204-6403.
