The Norwalk Education Foundation (NEF), Norwalk Federation of Teachers (NFT) and Norwalk Public Schools (NPS) are pleased to announce the 2020 Excellence in Education honorees.

During this difficult time, NPS employees across the district are going above and beyond to make sure that no child is left behind. The Excellence in Education honorees are representative of all the truly talented educators and support staff from each school. This is the fourth year that Excellence in Education honorees have been named. While Excellence in Education is typically celebrated annually with an event, this year’s finalists will be recognized virtually starting in May due to the COVID-19 coronavirus health crisis.

“Congratulations to all of the teachers and support staff who were selected to represent their schools at this year’s Excellence in Education and Educational Support Awards. During these difficult times, our educators and support staff are incredibly dedicated to making sure their students continue to learn and grow,” said NEF Executive Director Marge Costa. “While we cannot have our annual dinner this week to celebrate Norwalk Public Schools, NEF is working with NPS to determine how all of these nominees and their schools will be honored.”

The Excellence in Education awards recognize Norwalk’s certified teachers for excellence in our schools. Teachers are nominated by their peers, and each School Governance Council selects their finalist from the submitted nominations. Similar to prior years, honorees are also given the opportunity to apply for Norwalk Teacher of the Year selection. Recipients of this honor go on to represent their colleagues in the Connecticut Teacher of the Year program.

The Excellence in Educational Support awards were designed to honor any non-certified staff members who have earned the respect and admiration of students, teachers, administrators, co-workers and parents. Nominations from any member of the school community are submitted to School Governance Councils, who make the final selection. Prior honorees have included paraeducators, secretaries, custodians, foodservice workers and security guards. Paraeducators who are nominated are invited to apply for the Norwalk Paraeducator of the Year award and to represent their colleagues at the state level.

“This year’s honorees have been chosen to represent their schools and colleagues during an unprecedented time in education,” said NPS Superintendent Dr. Steven Adamowski. “While the country’s public health crisis has temporarily changed how we serve students, the work of Norwalk’s teachers and staff has been an example for others in Connecticut during these challenging times. We appreciate all the outstanding work and contributions that the 2020 honorees have made to their students and school communities, and congratulate all of their recognition.”

NFT President Mary Yordon said “During this time of isolation and social distancing, it is a pleasure to note the ways in which we are all part of a connected supportive community dedicated to good outcomes for our students. The Norwalk Federation of Teachers is very grateful for the continued support of the Norwalk Education Foundation. We are happy to celebrate the accomplishments of certified and non-certified staff, and especially those who are recognized with awards today. Congratulations to our school colleagues being named for the Excellence in Education awards, and the Excellence in Education Support awards, which reflect the admiration and respect of their peers. The staff of Norwalk Public Schools were committed to student success since well before the current challenges of coronavirus. We continue to commit to work collaboratively with community partners like NEF on behalf of the young people we serve, and the adults who care about them.”
