NPS School Re-Opening Task Force

NPS School Re-Opening Task Force
Posted on 07/07/2020

Norwalk Public Schools faces the critical task of safely and effectively re-opening in late August to resume the education of our students in the wake of the COVID19 pandemic.  This task is made even more compelling by data suggesting that the achievement gap of our most vulnerable students has widened as a result of the March to June school closure.

The Norwalk Re-Opening Task Force will be charged with providing the advice and expertise necessary for successful implementation of the Fall Re-Opening Model, as prescribed in the just released Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) report:  Adapt, Advance, Achieve: Connecticut’s Plan to Learn and Grow Together.  It is anticipated that decisions of the Task Force, while adapted to and applied to the unique circumstances of Norwalk’s schools, will follow the guidance and parameters contained in the statewide plan.

The Task Force will bring together district and school leaders, teachers, paraprofessionals, parents and community partners. Additional members may also be added to ensure that the necessary subject matter expertise in place to make informed decisions. Broad participation will enable our district to make the best decisions possible and help communicate these to the broader school community.

While Norwalk Public Schools has a head start with the health and safety protocols established for limited in-person learning this summer, there is still much to accomplish in a short period of time. Our Task Force will need to move quickly and decisively in the coming weeks to meet the upcoming deadline for submission of our proposal to the State for the Fall Re-Opening, as well as to meet our own local academic, operational, and personnel planning needs.

With the State’s guidelines now available, the initial meeting of the School Re-opening Task Force will take place on July 9, 2020 a Zoom conference. Subsequent meetings of the full Task Force, or of subcommittees assigned to address specific topics, may be held in person as conditions allow.

A list of Task Force subcommittees will be available after the July 9 meeting.
